When Little Becomes Much

A lot has been in the news lately about the Giving Pledge of billionaires. Equally as important is the news of everyday givers who amplify giving in their small communities, do it masterfully, and have been doing it for years. My work in philanthropy is a reminder that the largest number of contributions come from individuals, and they are more likely to be average citizens than billionaires.

Community service-based high school elective looking for in-class partners

Wake County's volunteer matching service, ME3, has succeeded in starting a community leadership and service elective at two county high schools. Over 50 students ages 15 to 18 will be participating in this pilot course, and ME3 is looking for organizations who would like to be a part of this exciting new class!

40 billionaires and counting…so what does it mean for North Carolina?

You may have heard about the challenge to billionaires that Warren Buffet started back in June; yesterday The Giving Pledge added its 40th billionaire to a roster of individuals and families who have publicaly made a moral commitment to give away the majority of their wealth.

You'd probably agree that this is as it should be, and it's great news. But this new trend has gotten me thinking lately....what does it mean for the rest of us, people who will never get a call from Mr. Buffet or Bill Gates to add our names to the billionaires' pledge?

First HBCU fraternity nears a century of giving back

Our state is strong in collective giving, or the idea that there is power in numbers when it comes to giving back. North Carolina's fraternities and sororities are a great example -- like the members of this black fraternity, who can be found giving back to their communities all over North Carolina.

“NFL’s Vonta Leach gives back to Robeson County” (The Fayetteville Observer)

The first six months of 2010 have been eventful ones for Vonta Leach. The Robeson County native completed his sixth season as a National Football League player and his third straight as a starter in January. Leach played so well that he was named an alternate at fullback for the NFL's Pro Bowl all-star game.
