“Davidson undergrad organizes scholarship push” (From Philanthropy Journal)

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore John David Merrill came to Davidson College from a public high-school in a high-poverty, inner-city neighborhood in Baltimore. One of the few white kids in his predominantly African-American school, Merrill was not on pace to go to a top-tier college until inspired by a few key high-school teachers, he says.

A student-led giving circle based at UNC-Chapel Hill, Realizing Empowerment Amongst our Communities Today in North Carolina (REACT NC), is now accepting proposals for community projects in North Carolina. The group will distribute $10,000 to better North Carolina communities through grants of $2,000 - $5,000.
REACT NC emerged out of a partnership between the Sunshine Lady Foundation and the "Philanthropy as a Tool for Social Change" course at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Buies Creek, N.C. –Tomatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers, peppers, beans and a multitude of other vegetables matured and were harvested this summer in a community garden just off U.S. 421 near the heart of the Campbell campus. A mission outreach opportunity of the Campbell University Campus Minister’s Office, the produce went to supply food pantries, impoverished persons and local churches in the area that distribute food to those in need.

We're proud to share that Amber Smith, founder/president of Wake County's volunteer matching service ME3, has been chosen as one of the recipients of Independent Weekly's 2010 Citizen Awards.
Among the many accomplishments of ME3, this year saw the launch of their Community Leadership and Service curriculum in two Wake County high schools.The students' first Service Project Fair, sponsored by NCGives, kicks off tonight!
