Most grandparents are proud of their grandkids - but our director, Donna Chavis, has granddaughters she can REALLY be proud of. Read on to see their hometown paper's coverage of how the girls are giving back this Christmas.
"Let generosity flow at Christmastime" (From The Robesonian)
And so this is Christmas ... and what have you done, another year over, and you haven’t paid for the last one. (My apologies to John Lennon.)
It’s that time of year again when many of us get a little jolly, a bit more generous, some melancholy, others intoxicated, and a few of us just go berserk. Last fall, on their own, Alyssa and Delaney held a flea market and sold some of their trinkets and toys and some snacks they’d made. The girls donated their profits to The Robesonian’s Empty Stocking Fund to help needy families have a better Christmas.
This small, selfless act inspired their grandparents and parents to devise a plan to encourage the girls to volunteer throughout the year. Money was set aside for each time they volunteered, from yard work to time at animal shelters, leading to a year-end gift of money the girls can donate to the organization or program of their choice.
“That’s how we wanted our children to grow up, that giving is a part of their being,” said Alyssa’s mom...
