“T.C. Berrien Elementary students’ generosity recognized” (The Fayetteville Observer)
May 17, 2010
The students and teachers at T.C. Berrien got a surprise Thursday after they filed into the gymnasium.
Their school - one of the most impoverished in the system - raised more money per student for Haiti earthquake relief than any other elementary school in Cumberland County.
According to the Highlands chapter of the American Red Cross, the school raised $1,800 - or $8.70 for each child."You stepped up to the plate," said Mike Russell, executive director of the local chapter. "You gave. You gave more than anyone else."
Students and teachers thought they were heading to the gym for a rally to get the children excited for the arduous end-of-grade tests.
About 98 percent of the school's students receive free lunch. The school is off Ramsey Street just north of downtown.
The students raised the money through a series of drives to collect loose change in February and March. "The kids were moved by the images they saw on TV," Principal Michael Tucker said...
