Youth giving program to start in Onslow County
December 30, 2009
The North Carolina Youth Giving Network, developed through a parternship between NCGives and Leading To Change, is launching a new site in Onslow County -- the first program of its kind in southeastern North Carolina.
From the Jacksonville Daily News:
"Applications are being accepted until Jan. 4 from area youth interested in taking part in a Youth Grants Board. The board facilitates youth-led groups in applying for money and assistance in creating youth-directed projects to address community issues and challenges in the local region.
The program is being initiated through the Jacksonville Youth Council after several of its members attended a youth summit in October and were exposed to the Youth Grants Board idea through the North Carolina Youth Giving Network.
...Anthony Brenes, a Southwest High School sophomore who sits on the Jacksonville Youth Council, said after hearing about the program at the youth summit he thought it would be a great program to start in Onslow County.
'I just thought it was a good idea because we could positively give back to our community because we know there are needs that can be helped,' he said. 'I just hope that we accomplish something in the end that we are proud of … something physical we have to show for our effort.'
...The Youth Grants Board application process is open [through January 4] to all young people eligible to attend or who are in good standing at any Onslow County high school. Applications for a position on the Youth Grants Board are available at Jacksonville City Hall, and at the Jacksonville Youth Council building on New Bridge Street."
